The bonus disc was the deal-closer for me on this latest RT (well, that and the fact that it's 1970). Most of the stuff on Dead.net is just flat out overpriced, but four discs for well under $30 even with shipping and you've got my attention.

Could someone please explain the Road Trips concept to me like I'm an idiot?

I got Dicks Picks (literally and figuratively): it's two-track complete or mostly complete shows. I got the Vault stuff: it's multitrack complete shows or compilations organized around a unifying theme.

What the hell is the idea behind Road Trips?

RT's orginally started out as compilations of specific tours, runs, or clusters of shows. For example, one had a Fall '79 theme, another was from a Cal Expo run in '93, etc. However, a couple of more recent editions (the one with 6/14/68 and this lastest one) have focused on single complete or almost complete shows.

The RTs are usually marketed with a "bonus disc" available with early orders.

Actually, I'm not sure even half of DP's were complete shows, and it's not like the first ones even were predominantly complete shows. They've been doing the cutting and pasting for ages!

The concept seems to be a bit of a moving target. So far it is like DP's in that they are two-track recordings however it was initially billed as highlights from a tour so the first one was a compilation from several shows from Fall '79 and the second one was from one of the '77 tours. Since then they started focusing a bit. The third one really featured 2 shows from summer '71 and the fourth from the Egypt with Love shows in '78. Since then their have been several (3 i think) that were whole shows or highlights from 2 shows. This latest one is a bit of a hybrid because it is from a single date that had two shows. So highlights from a run seems seems to be the current theme.
